Penile Plication Under General or Local Anesthesia

At New York Urology Specialists, all patients have a choice of having penile plication performed in the office under local anesthesia or in a hospital or surgical center under general anesthesia.

General anesthesia means that the patient is fully asleep.  Medications are administered through IV to put a patient to sleep and oxygen is given via a mask.  Some patients may require intubation for the duration of the procedure but usually, intubation is not required for penile plication.  While modern general anesthesia is fairly safe, there are always some risks involved that are typically related to patient’s medical problems.

With local anesthesia, the patient is fully awake.  Pain medication is injected around the penis (penile block) to numb the penis.   Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is one of the most experienced surgeons who has performed hundreds of penile surgeries under local anesthesia with a good success rate.  Pain medication takes 10-15 minutes to start working and provides anesthesia for 8-12 hours after the procedure.  Most patients do not feel any significant pain or discomfort after the procedure.

In general, more than 80% of our patients elect to proceed with penile plication under local anesthesia in the office settings.

Patients with severe anxiety or panic attacks are not good candidates for having the procedure done under local anesthesia and are typically advised to have a procedure done under general anesthesia in a surgical center or hospital.

Penile Plication Under Local Anesthesia At New York Urology Specialists

For most patients with Peyronie’s disease or congenital penile curvature, we able to perform penile plication under local anesthesia in the office settings.  The procedure takes about 1-to-1.5 hours to perform.  The patient is able to go home shortly after the procedure.

By avoiding general anesthesia as well as hospital settings, the procedure is much more affordable to patients without insurance and patients with high deductible insurances.

Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger at New York Urology Specialists is among a small number of urologists worldwide who are experienced in performing penile plication under local anesthesia.

When penile plication is performed in the office under local anesthesia, most patients report having no pain or minimal discomfort during the procedure.  During the procedure, the patient is fully awake while the penis is numb. Most men report pain score to be minimal 2-3 out of 10 (with 1 being no pain and 10 being the ‘worst pain of their life”).

Did you know?  Dr. Shteynshlyuger has performed over 1,000 penile surgeries including penile implants, correction of Peyronie’s disease, circumcisions, circumcision revisions, frenuloplasty, and congenital penile curvature.  He performs 150-200 penile surgeries a year.
