Peyronie’s Disease: What You Need to Know.
Peyronie’s disease is a significant medical problem that affects men. It can cause curvature of the penis, pain in the penis, shortening of the penis, narrowing of the penis and erectile dysfunction (difficulty obtaining or maintaining erections, loss of erection hardness).
Penile curvature is usually up or to the side but may also point down or be ‘corkscrew’.
Peyronie’s disease may also cause a palpable ‘nodule’ or hard mass in the penis often called “peyronie’s plaque“. Peyronie’s disease can cause a narrowing of the penile shaft with a constricting band or waist.
The severity of Peyronie’s usually corresponds to the angle of curvature with >30 degrees curvature more likely to cause typical Peyronie’s symptoms.

Peyronie’s Disease Classification: Acute and Stable Phase
Peyronie’s disease has traditionally been classified into two stages: active phase and stable phase.
The first phase is called acute or active stage and refers to the first 12-18 months after appearance of symptoms or curvature. During this phase the disease process is evolving. In some men with active phase disease, the disease goes away spontaneously (this happens in 10-15% of men); however more commonly disease progresses and gets worse. Thus early evaluation and initiation of treatment is advisable to limit disease severity.
The second stage of the disease is called chronic or stable phase. This usually refers to disease that has stabilized after the initial 12-18 months after appearance of symptoms. It is unlikely that symptoms improve spontaneously in men with stable disease however the curvature and symptoms may get worse.
While the diagnosis of Peyronie’s disease can be made from history – based on the presence of curvature and/or pain in the penis, it is important to establish an objective diagnosis with objective measurement of the curvature and measurement of the plaque size to track the progress of disease and success of treatment.
Penile ultrasound with a Doppler study after injection of medications to produce an artificial erection is performed by urologists specializing in Peyronie’s disease.
If I Have Bent Penis, Do I Have Peyronie’s Disease?
There are a number of causes that lead to penile curvature, Peyronie’s disease is one of the most common causes but you may also have curved penis caused by one of the other causes of penile curvature which include:
- Congenital chordee
