Dutasteride (Avodart): What You Need to Know

Dutasteride (Avodart) is an Effective Treatment for BPH Symptoms
Avodart, generically known as dutasteride, helps improve urinary symptoms in men. It can help improve the urinary stream and decrease the frequency of urination. Usually, it takes 2-3 months to see the benefits of using dutasteride. In addition to shrinking the prostate, dutasteride slows the rate of growth of the prostate. Sometimes dutasteride is also used for men with frequent UTI and prostatitis.
Dutasteride (Avodart) Works Best in Combination with Alpha-Blockers to Improve Slow Urine Stream
Dutasteride is effective in treating symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It can help men to wake up less at night to urinate. The effectiveness of treatment can be even greater if dutasteride is used in combination with medication such as tamsulosin or alfuzosin.

Cost of Dutasteride (Avodart) Pills
Avodart or generic dutasteride is fairly expensive with a monthly cost of $40-$100. Buying medications at a neighborhood pharmacy or pharmacies at Costco or Walmart is usually much less expensive than buying them at CVS or Rite-Aid. A less expensive but equally effective alternative to dutasteride is finasteride or Proscar. It works just as well and costs significantly less.
Dutasteride (Avodart) Side Effects and What to Do If You Get Them
Side effects of dutasteride are not common. Most men take dutasteride without any noticeable side effects. Taking dutasteride for a prolonged period of time can lead to gynecomastia or increased breast size. Some men taking dutasteride experience problems with sexual interest (libido) and erections. Typically, there is a decrease in ejaculate volume; patients planning to have children should not use dutasteride or finasteride.
Medications such as dutasteride have been implicated in post-finasteride syndrome, which can result in depression, anxiety, and other symptoms, typically in younger males taking dutasteride or finasteride for hair loss.
Alternatives to Dutasteride (Avodart): Treatment Options for Enlarged Prostate
If someone cannot tolerate dutasteride, finasteride is a similar medication within the same class of alpha-reductase inhibitors that can be used as an alternative to dutasteride.
Medications such as Flomax and Uroxatral (alfuzosin) can be used as an alternative to Avodart (dutasteride) or in addition to dutasteride with treating symptoms of enlarged prostate and BPH such as frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, and slow urine stream.
Treatment Options if Dutasteride (Avodart) Does Not Help.
Why Does Dutasteride Not Work or Stopped Working?
The most common reason that dutasteride does not help is that the prostate is too large to be treated with medications. Typically, a surgical procedure is needed. Other causes include dysfunction of the urinary bladder muscles, urethral strictures, bladder cancer, and various other problems.
If dutasteride no longer helps with urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, other treatment options such as laser enucleation of the prostate, bipolar TURP, Greenlight laser, and Urolift procedure can effectively treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
PSA and Dutasteride: What You Must Know
Medications such as Avodart (Dutasteride) can lower PSA level (prostate-specific antigen) by as much as 50%. It usually takes 3-6 months to get the full effect on PSA lowering. The effect on PSA is artificial. To correctly risk-stratify patients, we typically double the PSA to account for the use of medications such as finasteride and Avodart (dutasteride).
PSA levels are used to identify men who are at risk for prostate cancer. It is important to let your doctor know that you are taking or have been taking finasteride or dutasteride.
Dutasteride (Avodart) vs Finasteride (Proscar)
Studies show that dutasteride and finasteride have very similar efficacy in treating men with an enlarged prostate. Finasteride is less expensive and often preferred. There is no clear benefit of one medication over the other. Side effects are very similar as well.
Cost of Dutasteride (Avodart) and Insurance Coverage
Dutasteride is 2-3 times more expensive than generic Proscar (finasteride). Many insurances do not cover dutasteride or cover with a high copay. Because there is no significant benefit to justify the higher cost, we typically recommend finasteride.
