Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in Men with Enlarged Prostate and BPH.
Impotence and Enlarged Prostate Can Be Treated Simultaneously
Common sexual problems in men with BPH (enlarged prostate) include erectile dysfunction (difficulty obtaining and maintaining an erection), problems with ejaculation or un-ejaculation and sometimes low libido. In addition, men may also experience low energy levels and feel that they are easily tired.
The mechanism by which an enlarged prostate can lead to erectile dysfunction is complex.
Treatment of BPH Can Improve Sexual Health
Fortunately, effective treatment for enlarged prostate can help with some sexual symptoms such as problems with ejaculation, tiredness and energy levels.
Urolift, an innovative procedure for BPH and an enlarged prostate, has been shown to improve sexual symptoms and ejaculation problems in men.
For some men with mild symptoms of BPH who also have erectile dysfunction, medications such as Cialis may help with symptoms of BPH and ED.
For most men with an enlarged prostate who have difficulty obtaining and maintaining erections, erectile dysfunction needs to be treated separately from urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate.
Cialis for Treatment of Urinary Symptoms Caused by Enlarged Prostate
Cialis 5 mg, when taken daily, can help men with both problems, erection problems, and urinary problems. Cialis works best for men with mild to moderate symptoms of enlarged prostate. If you are taking Cialis daily and still have to wake up at night to urinate, have frequent urination or slow urine stream, other treatment options for enlarged prostate should be considered. These include medications such as Flomax, Detrol, finasteride and procedures such as the Urolift system for BPH and laser enucleation of the prostate.
Treatment of Erection Problems in Men with Enlarged Prostate.
Effective treatment options are available for the treatment of erectile dysfunction include medications such as Viagra, Cialis, Stendra, and Levitra. Other effective treatment options include penile injections with medications such as Trimix and Caverject. A penile implant is also an effective treatment option for erectile dysfunction, in particular for men for whom oral medications, penile injections, and other treatment options do not work well.
Sexual Side Effects of Common Treatments for BPH
Some treatment options for enlarged prostate can cause sexual side effects. Not every man gets these side effects but depending on the treatment some or many men can experience these side effects.
Flomax and Uroxatral (alpha-blocker medications): these medications are often used for the treatment of enlarged prostate can have un-ejaculation as a side effect. This is not dangerous but many men can get concerned. What happens is that no semen comes out after sex. Men who are bothered by this side effect can often take a different medication that may not cause the same side effect. Men who are trying to get their partner pregnant and develop un-ejaculation from medications such as Flomax should stop the medication and see us to discuss a different treatment option for BPH.
Proscar (finasteride): finasteride is often taken by men with enlarged prostate and smaller doses are used to prevent hair loss. Some men develop side effects to finasteride which may include difficulty obtaining and maintaining erections and decreased libido.
TURP and Laser Surgery for Enlarged Prostate: Many surgical treatment options for enlarged prostate can cause retrograde ejaculation (lack of ejaculation – no sperm or semen comes out of the penis after sex). This is not dangerous but some men are concerned. In addition, a small number of men may develop erection problems after transurethral surgery. For men who are candidates for it, Urolift for BPH is a good treatment option that avoids sexual side effects. Similarly, Dr. Alex Shteynshlyuger is one of the most experienced surgeons who perform Rezum therapy for enlarged prostate, which avoids sexual side effects as well.
