Urolift Procedure Keeps Other Treatment Options on the Table.

One of the major advantages of the Urolift procedure is that it does not preclude other treatment options such as Greenlight laser, Rezum therapy of the prostate, or TURP.

If the Urolift procedure does not achieve the desired result of un-obstructing the prostate, all other treatment options are still available in the future.

Men who underwent the Urolift procedure may still undergo other minimally invasive treatment options such as the Rezum procedure, HOLEP (prostate enucleation), Greenlight Laser of the prostate, and bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP).

If the Urolift Procedure Does Not Work, Does it Need to be Removed?

Because the Urolift implants are very small and do not normally cause any problems, they do not need to be removed if the Urolift procedure does not work as expected.  Typically, if another procedure is performed to shrink the prostate and to remove the prostate tissue, such as laser enucleation of the prostate, Greenlight laser, or bipolar TURP, the Urolift implants will be removed as part of that procedure

When Urolift is causing problems, and in particular when the Urolift components are protruding into the bladder or urethra, Dr. Shteynshlyuger has the experience and expertise to remove them.

How Often do Men Need Another Treatment after Urolift Procedure?

While the Urolift procedure works for over 90% of men with symptoms of enlarged prostate who are ideal candidates for the procedure, about 10% of men will require a different treatment approach.  For men who are less than ideal candidates for the Urolift procedure and decide to have the Urolift procedure, success rates are typically less than 90%.

For men who underwent the Urolift procedure for the treatment of urinary tract obstruction caused by enlarged lateral lobes of the prostate and did not experience adequate relief of symptoms, a thorough reevaluation is necessary.

Some men who have persistent urinary symptoms after the Urolift procedure may have coexistent bladder problems that need concurrent management such as the overactive bladder (OAB).  While the Urolift procedure may have solved one problem, without appropriate treatment for the other problem, typically a bladder problem, men often do not experience adequate improvement in the urinary symptoms. These men may not experience significant improvement in their urinary symptoms even though the Urolift procedure achieved the desired result.  Usually, the treatment of bladder problems will provide adequate relief of symptoms.

What are the Reasons that the Urolift Procedure Does not Work?

There are a number of reasons why the Urolift procedure may not work for some men.  Sometimes, the procedure was not performed technically well – there may be inadequate compression of the prostate or the Urolift stents may not have been positioned in an ideal position. If the prostate is very large, it is possible that fewer than ideal Urolift implants were placed.  Insurance companies limit the number of Urolift implants that a man can receive.  For men with a median lobe, it is important that the median lobe is treated as well.

Some men with large median lobes are not ideal candidates for the Urolift procedure and should consider other treatment options, such as the Rezum procedure or prostate enucleation.

Some men have both a prostate problem and a bladder problem, most commonly overactive bladder (OAB). They may require treatment of the bladder problems that cause urinary problems after the Urolift procedure.

Some men have a prostate that is just too big for the Urolift procedure. For these men, ablative prostate procedures that destroy prostate tissue, such as the Rezum procedure, HOLEP, bipolar TURP, or Greenlight laser, may provide greater benefit.

Did you know? Dr. Shteynshlyuger has performed over 1,000 surgeries and procedures for enlarged prostate, including Rezum, Urolift, prostate enucleation, laser ablation of the prostate, and TURP.  He performs over 100 prostate procedures a year.
